Wedding cake idea

Ok. I'm doing my best friends wedding cake in August...so I'm starting to plan now.

I just found out the theme is red and white. My friends mom is doing a lot of the planning as my friend lives in Scotland and the wedding will be here in canada.

My friend and her fiance are both teachers, and there is a little bit of a "teacher" theme at the wedding.

Anyone got any ideas on a teacher like theme I could do for the cake. I was thinking maybe using apples (as the theme is red and white)...you know, kids used to give teachers apples...

Something like that..

yeah apples, and you can have apple blossoms as a flower for the cake

I think you are spot on Raingirl. . . . I think the Apple idea will be the most elegant for a wedding. . . . . .

Perhaps, if its possible, you could do a 'blackboard' with a message written on it. . . (can you make black icing??) ;)

Yep. I know how to make apple blossoms out of royal icing too! Never thought of that!

Yeah, you can make black icing...I suck at writing on cakes though.

Hmm....I could actually make marzepan apples, and use them on the cake with apple blossoms....

I should really find out if anyone has food allergies first though. WOuldn't want to use marzepan if someone has an almond allergy!

I was going to suggest strawberries...but I guess that wouldn't be easy to get in August.... and apple blossoms would be very elegant. :thumbs up

Check with a cake decor place, I'll be that there is an alternative to marzepan that is "nut free" :)

Be sure to take pics of this when you are done, we'd love to see it.

Oh Happycats! That first link is perfect! Imagine a few changes though...Keeping the same all white, but making pink and yellow apply blossoms (http://www.wilton.com/decorating/basic/blossoms.cfm) instead of using white ones. THen placing small deep red roses around the trim at the base of each teir, about 2 inchs apart... and they aren't having a topper, so how about this instead. Scroll down half the page on this site (http://www.imacrs.com/dry-emboss.htm), there is an apple. I could make a color flow apple, and put their names on it, and it could stand at the top of the cake! Or even a color flow black board!!

For those who don't know what colour flow is, it's like taking a picture in a colouring book, and making it in icing. You outline it in a thicker icing to creat a barrier, then you fill in the area you outlined with the same colour, just watered down, so it's all soupy. When it dries, you have this flat embossed like picture you can decorate. Colour flow icing is like royal icing, but it has added things to it to make it dry shiny instead of dull. You can see it in this cake (http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipesandprojects/graduation/hatsoff.cfm), the graduation hats are made of colour flow.

hehe! when I was thinking of an apple themed cake I was picturing the wedding cake looking like a child's birthday cake with big red apples on the side.

I really like the all white cake that Happycats linked us to. It's wonderful!

You should check out the other wedding cakes on that site, some are wild and crazy, but then again they are from Las Vegas you know :D (nothing against Las Vegas but they do do some wild and crazy weddings there, and cakes too,Judging from this website :p )

Ok..another question. I've only been to two weddings so I'm not sure how this works. To what extent will a hall provide things (I'm thinking things like cake cutters and servers). I don't want Laura to go cut her cake and have nothing to cut it with. I see cake cutters/servers as gifts as well. Is there any tradition surround this? Should I maybe give them a pair as a gift?

We bought our own fancy cake cutter, also had another cake (that was already boxed and bowed with name and wedding date on it) in little single size servings. (basically the cake is just for show and cutting :D ) I guess that's why alot of them are made of cardboard, only the top (part you cut) is real. :p

Each reception place has its own set of rules. Most charge a cake cutting fee--they will not allow you to cut it, but will charge you to have them cut it. Typically there is a fee of 1-2 dollars per person in attendance at the wedding. You can use your own cake cutter for the photo...but then the wait staff take the cake to the back, cut it and serve it on dessert plates.

I'm not familiar with any settings where the wait staff/kitchen staff do no take care of this....perhaps you should have your friends mother check for you...this is not something you want to be "winging" at the wedding!

This is the second wedding cake I have done, but it wasn't used for a wedding (just used to learn how do to tiers). I asked my friends mom for the number of the hall so I can co-ordinate it all with them before the wedding. Because I'm also in the bridal party, it's going to be a busy few days (staggettes, rehersals, BBQ's, fittings, then I have to make the cake and all, and I will be coming from 1.5 hours away!)

I would freeze it for easy transport, and also easy set up when you get to the reception. That's what the girl who made mine did. :thumbs up

unfortunately you can't freeze fondant, as that is what the cake will be made with. The fondant would melt and "sweat" as it defrosted. You can only freeze buttercream cakes.

I was thinking of making the cake on the Friday (wedding is saturday). I would bake thursday, fill the cake and freeze it (easier to work with frozen), then decorate on friday (only putting the fondant on after it is at room temp), and then drive it to my parents house, as they live closer to where the wedding will be. The rehersal is supposed to be the thursday, and stagette will be friday (as she doesn't get home until 2 days before the wedding). It will be a low key stag.

Then the next day (wedding day) won't be so stressed having to get all ready and bring the cake. I can get ready first, then go over and pick up the cake, drop it off at reception, put it together, and then meet up for the ceremony. Or..if my parents are being really nice..i *might* be able to ask them to bring it..but i'm not sure I would trust them for that.. I could always stay at my parents as well... It would save 1 hour car rides twice a day for at least 3 days in a row. We still don't know who is going to feed and walk Odin while we will be gone the day of the wedding!

Here is a pic of a little modifying I did on photoshop this afternoon (I'm not so good with photoshop yet). Green vines instead of white...pink apple blossoms with red edges, and the red dots can be like apple blossom buds, red roses around the base with green leaves, and an apple on top with their names...

If you're looking for opinions I would say that the red flowers are too much....they take away from the elegance of the cake by putting too much on the layer....they would be nice without the vines and flowers though.

Just my opinion...when I think of wedding cakes I think classic, simple and elegant...

If the theme is teachers then I would say the topper you have will work out just right!

I agree. You should have one or the other. For a red and white wedding, I vote for just the bigger red flowers. Also, I don't know if this will still kill someone, but if you have the cake on separate tiers and not vertical, maybe the marzepan won't transfer from layer to layer and you could have a hypoallergenic layer. Maybe. At my dad's wedding, there was grand marnier cake and the top tier was alcohol free for those of us who stay away from alcohol. :)

o.k. just smack me if I'm being a pain wih the freezer idea, but I really think It'd make your life sooo much easier :) I found this link that seems cool, supposedly if you let the cake "sweat" in an airconditionned room while still wrapped up, all the condensation will adhere to the wrap. ?? You'd know better than I if that'll work, just tryin to help. :)

I really like the second one there with the white background, and the cream scrolling...that's something I will have to consider.

I am going to make a few test cakes this weekend. I will post them and you guys can vote on which you like best.

Prin. There is a beautiful winter wonderland cake in one of my cake decorating books. I'll ask the BF to scan it......

Or, if you are near a bookstore, the book is called the Home Guide to Cake Decorating by Jane Price.

What are you doing for the cake topper? This is the one my wife surprised me with...

raingirl
May 16th, 2005, 11:34 AM
Yeah. I've seen that before. It's one of the Wilton brand ones.

They don't have a topper idea...so I'll probably just do the apple thing...or a black board.
