Cat Marking

May 6th, 2005, 10:47 AM

Is ther any way to stop a cat (male, fixed) from marking indoors.
Mr. Paddles shares a house w/ a recognized alpha male & a female
(all operated). Seems to be a territory issue. No problems outdoors but preferably an indoor cat. A new home is a last resort but...

Any help?

Some cats are thin-skinned and easily stressed. When they are, they may mark this way to surround themselves with their own scent which makes them feel more secure.

Can you put the two cat's who do not mark in a separate area for a few days, and let the cat who marks loose in the house? Sometimes this can resolve the problem.

I would also get some Rescue Remedy to try on the marking cat, to take the edge off his anxiety.

Some people report success with Feliway products, which release something akin to natural pheremones into the air. This is designed to lessen anxiety, promote calmness in the cat, and thereby curb stress-related marking.
It comes in plug-ins and spray. I've never used this product, and it seems it doenst work at all for some cats, but might be worth a try.
Here is one link with a bit of info:

Good luck! I hope you are able find a solution.
