Strange Behavior

I have a 3 year old Golden/Lab mix who loves to go into the park across the street but refuses to go on any type of walk. He is frightened of trains and we have a commuter train that goes through our town (about 4 blocks away) and he will never walk that way. He needs exercise as he is a big dog (130lbs) and I don't know what to do to get him to start walking away from home. I have had him since he was 8 weeks and don't know why he is like this. Any suggestions??? I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Trains are loud and cause heavy vibrations, I can't blame him for his dislike of them. Dogs have opinions too. Can you take him on walks in a different direction?

Karin,
Thanks for the reply, but yes I have tried to walk in a different direction and he will only go so far and then wants to come home. Any other suggestions?
