Are any of you familiar with Freecycle? For those who aren't, it's a website for communities to offer (for FREE) items (toasters, clothing, play equipment...etc) you don't want anymore. Well, on the Freecycle site for Fredericton, I've seen a puppy, and a Maine Coon cat and her kittens given away in just the last two days! This site is for free...you cannot charge anything for what you offer. I just don't believe it!

Previously from freecycle. She is a super sweet and friendly girl,
but I am affraid my other cat is going to hurt her. She is spayed and
very clean and loves to cuddle! Anyone have room in their home for
her? She is not the agresive one... my other one is!
indoor black male cat, grown up with children, fixed, very friendly,
free to a good home if interested email me
2 orange, 1 long hair, 1 short, 2 black, 1 long hair, one short, 1 short haired
black and white, all weened and trained and ready to go. My net is acting up,
so if you would like one, email me with your phone number (local only) and I'll
give you directions to pick one up, as I'm having a hard time replying to
These adds were all placed just today! The first one was originally given as a Freecycle item, and now the taker has relisted her. Should I say something to the moderator or is it pointless?

That is so sad! I would say something. Even if you think it will not help it can not hurt!

Definitely say something to the moderator......the mods don't read all of the freecycle posts (at least in Ottawa), and, they might not realize that is happnening, unless someone complains.
Make sure you tell them why it is a problem. Hopefully, they will put a stop to it.

Ok, I will. Not sure how to word it, but I'll try to make my point! Any tips?

I belong to a freecycle as well and we just had a very long and very emotional discussion about putting pets on for free. The final opinion of the moderator was that it would be allowed to continue but the person giving the animal away had to be aware that not everyone had good intentions.
Having said that, I was sucked in to a person who posted that due to both her and her husband working 9-10 hour days that they wanted to re-home their 6 year old german shepherd. I emailed her and suggested she come to pets.ca for advice and assistance.
Then a couple of days later, in the same freecycle she posts a "needed" -- she was looking for a double or triple stroller as she was starting a home based day care business! so much for not being home for the dog! I was so annoyed at her -- if I knew where she lived, I would have gone over and bitten her!

Ok, so I sent an email to the moderator of the Freecycle site here where I live telling her why animals shouldn't be given away for free, and why there should be a contract invovled and so on. Here is the response I got.
Hi and thanks for your email.
Every local Freecycle(tm) group has made a decision as to whether to
allow postings for pet or not on the local level. In the Fredericton
group, we ran a poll, and the members voted nearly 75% in favor of
keeping pet postings.
Unfortunately, there are people that "need" to give pets away free
because they do not/can not afford to pay to take it to the SPCA, and
giving a pet away free is much more humane than some of the
alternatives. And as I'm sure you are aware, nothing, not even fees
and contracts can prevent some animals from very sad situations.
We may sometime in the future post another poll allowing the members
to decide, but until then, we have and will send reminders that pets
are not objects, but wonderful friends that need love and commitment!
Thanks again for your email, and feel free to email any comments or
concerns to us any time.
Have fun with Freecycle(tm)!
