Story for large breed owners

Just for the record, I am used to people snatching their dogs up in fear when they see me walking nearby with Raj (great dane). At first it really bothered me, but now I'm not as sensitive about it.
Something else that I am used to is small dogs attacking Raj before the owners spot us. That used to bother me, and still does. Usually the owner laughs and thinks it's so cute for their little doggy to attack a big dane, but I wonder how cute they'd find it if the roles were reversed?
Anyway, I'd been to my chiropractor, and Raj is always allowed to come in with me. My chiro loves her to pieces. So Raj and I are walking out of the little plaza where his office is, and we are just strolling in front of the stores in the plaza, towards the Jeep- when this Jack Russell terrier comes BOLTING from the video store snarling and yapping and chasing after Raj!
I'm thinking "Oh great, here we go....another little one is going to attack".
So this time I stopped and turned to face the terrier, and Raj just looked at him. The terrier went from running full speed after us yapping like mad- to literally skidding to a full ABRUPTLY SILENT stop, whereupon he peed himself and slunk away. It was COMICAL.
Just then his owner stuck her head out of the video store (apparently he was supposed to be leashed to the door, as I noticed the leash hanging from it), looking for her dog after hearing his yapping. When she saw Raj, she GASPED and ran to her little terrier and snatched him up, giving us fearful dirty accusatory looks as she walked away. She gave us one final glare before going back into the video store.
Oh brother. I mean, it was HER dog who took off after us- breaking off his leash- while Raj just stood there. What exactly did we do wrong here?

Well I decided to take Raj for a little walk before we loaded back up into the Jeep, and I was still irritated by this woman and grumbling to myself. I walked to a nearby convenience store, and headed for the back of it where there is a nice clearing. As I rounded the back corner of the store, I nearly ran into another woman who was walking her dog (small mixed breed) out of the clearing. She looked at us and immediately picked up her pooch, frightened. Then she looked again at Raj, and -putting her dog back down on the ground in front of us- said with great relief "Oh! Thank God it's a Dane". Yaaay! I could have kissed this woman! We stood there and chatted about danes and how gentle they are, how well they get along with other dogs, etc. This, while our darlings sniffed and wagged and sniffed and wagged and cast pleading glances at us to please let them offleash to play.

What a wonderful way to end the day!

I know this is a long post, but I wanted to share how much this last encounter meant to me. It has never happened before, and maybe some of you large-breed owners can relate? I thought you of all people might understand how touched I was by her reaction, as you've likely had to deal with the fear-snatchers most regularly.

Actually, I have something similar but it's about labs, not big dogs... My brother brought his friend and wife up to my grandparents' cottage a couple of summers ago. These people had two beautiful adopted rotties (one recently died of cancer) and of course they came up too. The cottage is inside a horseshoe turn so we see the people walking or driving by for a relatively long time. Anyway, these rotties saw a couple jogging and bolted down the stairs after them very scarily.. The people FREAKED (I would have too, I mean they were barking and sprinting...) but these dogs are sweet and obedient so no one was really worried. It all worked out and then last summer, I was up with my dogs (my lab husky mix and my newf mix). The same joggers came around the corner and my doggies bolted down the stairs. I knew it was the same people because I recognized the screams (lol). So scream scream scream (we couldn't see because of the trees) and then "OOOOHHHH They're LABS!!!" and then they calmed down and started petting the doggies and asking us tons of questions about them. It was funny to hear the switch.

I don't have too many little doggies around here, but I know that little dog owners sometimes don't really understand dogs too well and overreact or misreact... My neighbors with their minpin are terrible. Their dog is practically eating my dogs and my dogs are backed into a corner and she's like "Aw look at how much he loves to play. He just loves big dogs!" And I'm like, "Uh.. That growling and the raised hair means he's not playing..."

Great stories! I was on the other side of one of these stories once...

Friends of ours had rented a spot at a camp ground and had invited us to drop by one summer day. We knew they had a young Rotti. When we arrived at the camp site, we found that their "young Rotti" was about the size of a small horse. He was tied to a tree (camp ground rules) and was making an awful racket when we arrived. He was grumbling and growling and straining at his chain. I was quite terrified - that chain didn't look nearly strong enough to hold him back! But our friend assured me that he was very friendly and I could walk up to him with no worries. I trusted this friend because I knew he was very knowledgeable about his breed and had researched for a long time before getting this pup. Anyhow, as I approached Chester (the Rotti's name), he just got louder and louder. Once I was within petting distance, though, I realized that this was no vicious monster. He was a giant, slobbering suck. He just leaned against my legs (nearly took them out from under me, actually), gave me great big drooly kisses and wiggled his butt so fast I thought he was going to sprain something. :D

Hey, Cactus Flower. Next time a JR tries to attack your dog and the owner gives you a dirty look, you should wrap your arms around Raj's neck and say, "Geez! Can you keep your vicious dog under control please?! You scared my poor baby half to death!" :p

had an experience too when i was walking my 3 dogs: dacshund with my 8 yr old daughter upfront, yellow lab with me (2nd) and bull mastiff with my 18 yr old son. we were walking in file on the side walk around the village one day when this mixed breed dog run viciously barking out of his owners yard and tried to attack my dacshund, of course our lil bagger (chowdy) tried to bark back but the lab and mastiff just stayed as calm as they can....when the mixed breed saw the bull mastiff (spanky) he just screamed and made a creative ala gymnastic u-turn back to his yard which made his owner and i laugh so hard.....his owner said..."awww...you got no b_lls against that big guy eh?" lol.....such a funny scene.

Prin that is so funny! What are the odds...the same joggers!
And yes, I've yet to see anyone terrified of a lab. Most just automatically move in for the petting. Great dogs.

WritingForFun, good to see (er, read ) you again!!!!!!! Hard to tell with a Rotti, but don't you just love those dogs that are barking at you in what seems a threatening manner, then you notice their tail wagging? LOL.

That would have been a great response to that lady, had my anger not eclipsed my senses at that moment. Sometimes I wish I had the strength to pick Raj up. I'd surely do it a time or two when we happen upon a little yappy dog! And I'd wear the same frightened accusatory look. LOL.

Isn't it funny how the big dogs just stand there like "Yeah, and?".

it really shocks me when ppl pick up their dogs, not only are they encouraging the dogs to fear each other (the big dog wonders what is wrong with the little one, well charlie does anyway :rolleyes: ) but the owners themselves risk serious injury. the amount of times i have seen or heard of ppl getting ripped to shreads when a dog attacked and they picked up the little one so the dog attacks them instead (one woman picked up her little poodle and was almost killed by 4 staffies who atacked at the time) where uif they just left the dog on the ground and kept going, if anything happened it would mostly be all noise and stand over tactics (bloody doggy terrorists, well charlie is anyways :D ). instead they make the situation worse by firstly getting involved and then picking up the dog which indicates to both dogs its a big deal. just kills me

but in the past when little dogs attack i do the hug her neck thing and ask for them to control their dogs and pamper my poor little scared baby, i dont think ppl reaslise those little dogs are scary too, jsut because your a big girl does not mean that a little thing attacking and biting you is not scary, size is not always an issue.

but in future im going to use the 'keep your vicious dog in check' line. see if that cna reverse the tables a bit hey.

I've had the same thing happen to me with my BMD cross shepherd, who was 120 lbs the dog got close enough to relize he had bitten off more than he could chew and ran away. Tucker my new border collie has had a terrier type breed yapping in his face and yes the woman picked it up Tucker just looked at me like what the hell is that. I think they are trying to compinsate for size not that Tucker is that big. Some times I'd like to give them a swift kick up the arse, that or their owners. Opps I didn't say that out loud. LOL

I have a female shepherd. We were walking in a park (our dog, husband and myself) and this lady approached with her yorkie and picked her up as soon as she saw us even though both dogs were leashed. Well my hubby responded by picking up our 75 lbs shepherd and pretended to kind of protect her from the yorkie and turned his back a little as well towards her when we passed on the path. It was too funny!

That is sooo funny. I can picture that- picking up a 70+lb dog-- too funny.

I have walked with my share of both large and small breed dogs. When I was fostering the doberman people used to cross the road because of him, same with the bull terrier. For some reason they love ozzy, he is a staffy cross but because he has the two different coloured eyes, people are facinated. Now when I walk Atticus(great dane), people are always gawking. I even had tourists take pictures of him today, they posed with him as if he was a famous monument or statue. The best is when we take everyone for a walk, this means a great dane, the staffy mix and 2 chihuahuas. People find this absoultely hilarious. The chihuahuas are on a tandem lead usually getting twisted and tangled so the last time we were out we attached them to the collar of Atticus, once again pictures were snapped and a one hour walk turned into a 3 hour walk just so we could answer questions. I hopefully wont get tired of the wow factor of owning a dane, I still seem to love it. Also just another thing about little dogs running and barking after the big ones, I had to pull a toy poodle off a golden. This poodle caused quite a bit of damage. The golden owners were just walking their dog around the corner when out of a house flys this little black toy poodle. Went right for the goldens neck. It was a very odd and scary scene. Those little dogs can be down right nasty. My bichon that i had growing up only bit (minor bites but still bites none the less, both in the heel) two people in his 15 year life. Out of all the people in the world, the two people he chose to take a bite out of were a lawyer and the cheif of police.

There is this lady that always walks her dog down the back alley of our house. Before we got Shadow we would take Belle for her walk and passed her one evening, both dogs were on leashes and we were no where near each other. Im not sure the type of dog she has but Id say at he's least 30 pounds. We are about 20m away from her and she picked her dog up! Belle wasn't even barking. Belle is a 15 pound Cockerspaniel X!!!! Now when we walk both and run into her she of course picks up her dog and scurries past us as fast as possible! I can see her being a little nervous about a German Shephard, but a Cockerspaniel!! I cant help but laugh evey time it happens.

I was out just this afternoon walking Bear and Kaos. We just rounded the corner near our house, and all of a sudden I hear this lady scream, "oh *****, don't let your dog kill him". All of a sudden I (and Bear) notice this chihuahua come barrelling across the road and attach itself to Bear's upper lip.

Bear's just standing there looking at me like, "can I kill him, mom?". I yelled, "Bear, NO". So Bear just backed up a bit, put his paw on the chihuahua's head, forced him off his lip and held him against the ground till the owner came over. The owner was so upset, she apologized about 50 times, the meantime Kaos is standing there like, "what the heck just happened".

I never have and never will pick up Sadie. I totally agree with what someone said about it encouraging her to be fearful, which I would never want. In general, I trust that people will be able to control their large dog around my tiny one and always ask if their dog is "ok with little dogs" before approaching. I haven't had a problem yet. In general though, Sadie is a LOT more respectful towards bigger dogs than she is towards little ones. Haha, she's one smart cookie.

I own both small and big! I have two MinPins and a Doberman and I see people snatch up thier little dogs when they see Mocha, what they rarely notice is her two 'brothers' behind! LOL Once people know she lives with small dogs they are a little better but I am often told how my Dobe is going to eat thier little dog and children for that matter!!! ROFL!!! People are funny.... I have been asked if the MinPins were her puppies!

And poor Bear!!! :( . What kind of dog is he? And Kaos? Both are very well behaved, by the sound of it.

Sounds like Sadie is a smart one (and such a great name- it's mine ;) ). I never thought about reinforcing the fear, but it makes sense.

Are the minpins the same in disposition as the large dobies? What, if any, are their differences? Forgive me, I'm very curious!

There's a picture of Bear in his own thread (I think I called it Bear wants a treat)...can anyone tell I just finished working nights? Surprised I can remember my name right now.

Bear is a 158 lb (yes, he's lost weight with the puppy chasing him around all day) lab/bull mastiff/rottweiler mix. Kaos is a 9 week old bull mastiff/rottweiler mix (and a holy terror to boot).

Thanks for the compliments! The photo of Mocha and the little one in the window is Meelo a little foster dog we had! Fawnzie is actually considered a dilute red but MinPins do come in blues and fawns (although not recognized by the AKC or CKC and they usually have crappy coats!) I love jewellery on dogs!!! We've had two boy dogs forever and I wanted a female that I could put pink and cute things on, I was thinking more female MinPin but we have Mo! LOL It's hard to find cute stuff in her size.

Your Dane is lovely, that was a breed we were looking at when we wanted a 'big' dog! I think they are just giant love bugs!

Dobermans and MinPins are similar in some ways. They are both affectionate, big on cuddles, high energy! I treat my MinPins like big dogs as they go rotten if you don't! They can be snappy little buggers if they get away with too much! We forgot to tell Mocha she's not a MinPin and she often insists on sitting on our laps!!! It's funny how the two breeds are totally unrelated but alike and of course look alike.... Dobermans are easy in the sense of trainability IMO and MUCH better at house training! MinPins are one of the hardest breeds to house train! Our Mocha only had one accident after bringing her home from the pound and she was outside for the first 7 months of her life!

Both are protective and good watch dogs, the MinPins are more barky and noisy while the Doberman is a quiet observant dog. I love them both and love having a 'matching' pack, not done on purpose!

And to think he's only 4 months old and 62 lbs. Wait till he's 1 yr old!

When people pull their dogs away I usually snicker. Little do they know that Zeus is just a big teddy bear and loves all dogs and people.

And I have to say, if Bear looked at me like that, he'd get whatever treat he wanted!!! Love his brindled-looking mask and then the dark coat surrounding it. And that expression!

I feel very ignorant now. I thought MinPins were miniature Doberman Pinschers? I've heard people grumble "why they would shrink a doberman is beyond me...". That's why I was amazed at Fawnzie's color. I'm getting an education here, for sure. You should start a thread, telling the difference. I'll bet I'm not the only one who has been mistaken about this.

Funny story. I was walking capone in a hydro field. There was this dog barking behind a fence. I could see clearly in their back yard as it was a chain fence. This was a little white dog. Bark bark bark. Capone didn't even look over. Suddenly out of the sliding glass doors comes an old lady screaming cocoa cocoa and running after her dog and her husband is standing at the doors now. This women scoops up her dog and runs feverishly back and her husband slams the doors. I WAS SOOOOO MAD. I wanted to find there house and sit out on there lawn. This I think is the same lady that picks up her dog even if I am 500 yards away. Its incredible. I was behind the fnec and across the field. Like seriously. I try so hard to not take it personal but I just want to shake these people.]
But then there are the people that stop and talk to me about pits and make a point in petting them. That lifts my spirit

"woo its only a pit bull... I thought it was one of those crazy cocker spaniels... " That is something you can bet someone they will never ever hear,,,Another thing this lady told me to muzzle my dog I told her it wasn't law as yet and before she becomes the new community patrol she should start abiding by the current rules. Like I don't know leashing your dog. Needless to say she didn't say a word and felt kinda dumb... I kinda rehersed that too for the next time someone said that and had there dog offleash. .. Worked just as planned... Mooo ha ha ha ha ha...

From what I understand Mr. Doberman liked the look of the MinPin (Reh Pinscher at the time) and based the Doberman on the that look!!!! SO really a Doberman is a giant version of the MinPin! LOL MinPins are about 300 years old while the Dobe only 100.

He stated a wish to breed "a giant terrier that would look much like the five-pound Reh Pinscher but that would be fifteen times heavier and larger."

I think the only thing in common that the two breeds is that German Pinscher is in the history of both breeds.

I know when I go walking people say "oh look at the little Doberman" you can imagine they get the hisorty from me as it is one of those things I can't stand! LOL I say actually Mocha is a giant MinPin! ROFL!!!!

I never heard that dobermans are large versions of min pins. out of curiosity do you know why they are called min pins if they were made first? I'v owned lots of dobermans, but never really had an interest in min pins. It's very rare for the breed to have been bred up rather than down. Some scientists believe that greyhounds are bred up from Italian greyhounds, but of course there really isn't any way to prove it because IGs and greys are two of the oldest breeds that exist.

I hate when people pick up their little dogs when a big one comes along. The only time I pick Candi (IG) up is after I ask if the big dog is friendly with small dogs and the answer is no. I haven't met many that tell me their big dog isn't but I don't want to find out the hard way. there is one dog we see almost everyday on our walk, I think it's a mastiff mix, that isn't good with small dogs and I have to pick Candi up when we see them and they are on the same sidewalk. He is really sweet with people, but not very good with dogs and Candi is so small it wouldn't take much to hurt her. Unfortunetly Candi is kind of skittish so I try not to pick her up because it would reinforce it, but I don't want her to have a bad experience and ruine the progress we're making either. (she is just starting to trust more and more dogs and people YAY! :thumbs up )

I beleive the German Pinscher is the oldest of the three, thus the MinPin name for Miniature Pinscher, the red MinPins were called Reh Pinscher which means red terrier in English.

From the MPCA:

"The breed was imported into the United States about 1919, and the first one was registered with the AKC in 1925 under the breed name Pinscher (Toy). Prior to 1928, there were few Miniature Pinschers seen at shows in America. At first, entries at dog shows were in the miscellaneous class. A national breed club, The Miniature Pinscher Club of America, was established in 1929 and the Min Pin was shown in the Terrier Group. In 1930, it was reclassified as a Toy breed under the name Pinscher (Miniature). The official name was changed to Miniature Pinscher in 1972."

Dobermans ARE NOT bred up from the MinPin at all, the LOOK was based on the MinPin and larger breeds were used to create the Doberman. The only common thread in the two is the German Pinscher, as both have the breed in thier history.

I didn't mean actully bred up, no dog is like that it, to my knowledge it can not exist because for the dog to become bigger or smaller another breed would have to be interduced making it a different breed. I ment the bigger version that looks like it is usually first, then the small dog comes. I just worded it that way to make it easier to type so it wouldn't take so long to write. I assumed that was already known knowledge, sorry. guess you know what they say about people who assume is true lol.

Don't worry Jackie, I misunderstood that, too. I thought they were bred up.

You can breed up, in a way, though. You just take the largest pup from every litter and breed them with the largest pup from someone else's litter and continue that cycle. I've seen this with Dane breeders.

MIA this is fascinating, and I thank you SO MUCH for the information. I still urge you to post this as a new thread, maybe call it "Dispelling the myth about the MinPin" or something. People browsing the site would find it extremely helpful (as I did). I have been under the TOTAL misconception that a minpin is a shrunken Doberman, and I admit to even joining in on the grumbling about making a "toy doberman". I, for one, believe that you can't improve upon a Doberman. Leave them be. They're perfect.

LuvMyPit, yer breakin my heart :sad: . Now I want to fly out there and stand by your house, so when you two come out I can say "THANK GOD IT'S ONLY A PIT BULL". I admit I would be nervous, though, if I had my dogs with me. But only because of the animal aggression pits are eventually known for. Still, it would only make me nervous is your pit was off-leash. But people? Shoot, I've never met a pit who didn't love people. And I mean NEVER. Lap dogs, that's what they think they are.

Have you been on ebay lately? Go to the home & garden, pets section (specifically dogs, collars & tags) and check out all the lovely accoutrements you can get for your diva dogs. Very chic! :thumbs up

There was an article in our local paper about how much money owners spend on their dogs. Apparently, according to the American Pet something-or-another (sorry :o ), people on average spend about $350USD on their dogs for treats, toys, beds - this does not include food, vet visits or the cost of the dog itself! :eek: So, anyone wanting to start up their own business, this is a pretty good way to go! :D

I have to say, Cactus Flower, that after seeing Raj's painted toenails, nothing you do surprises me any more!

Here are my stereotypically friendly dogs that look like labs (Jemma's Lab Husky and Boo is Newf Pointer...) I'm glad for those stereotypes but still as they are black and Jemma with her white-blue eyes) people cross the street nearly every day. :)

As you can probably tell, we've a love for large breed dogs (don't care if they're purebred or not). Bear was a rescue from a neighbour who was beating the crap out of him on a regular basis, and Kaos was the result of an "accidental pregnancy", so we adopted him.

And thank you for the full-face Jemma! Those eyes are mesmerizing, I tell ya. Are they sensitive to sun? I heard that blue-eyed dogs have problems with that.

Jemma couldn't care less about the sun. Half the time she ends up orienting me so when she looks at me the sun is in her face (I notice because she can't catch the ball with the sun in her face). She's got only undercoat though, no real fur so she ends up super hot really fast. I wet her and it actually can like 4 hours for her to get dry.

Its amazing how I just read this post the other day and guess what happens today. I have Atticus outside on a leash and there is a lady with about a 4 month old husky puppy, she sees Atticus and quickly picks up her puppy and covers it as if he was going to eat it. Atticus didnt even give the puppy the time of day. The thing is because she was covering the pup so much, if Atticus was the type to actually attack this dog he would tear right through this lady to get to it. Grr this irritated me. I did what you all said the second time they passed, I covered Atticus as if he was going to be attacked by this little puppy, and of course the woman was not impressed, but I sure was LOL

OMG that is so funny! Maybe she's smiling??? My Chloe pulls back her lips and "smiles" when running to greet me. Strangers think it is a snarl when she does it to them- all they see are the teeth. But she's smiling, I swear.

Ya she growls really loud. She's very vocal all the time, and she never snaps or anything. It really is a bit different than when she growls at the dog park or something. I can pet her in the morning and it's ok but at night, the teeth come out. I can pet her the same way, but she growls. And when you stop, she cries and tries to get your hand back... PMS?

BulliMom that really hits home. Too bad people don't know how pet-friendly danes are. Maybe we should walk ours with signs around their necks. But then, what should the sign say, and would people even bother to read them before hiding their precious babes?
