Gate City, VA -- A construction worker checking a remote southwestern Virginia road found carcasses and body parts of about 150 dogs, sheriff's officials said Thursday.
"When we got to the scene, you just could not believe the smell, and the amount of dogs down there was just unbelievable," sheriff's investigator Chris Holder said. "I've never seen anything like it. It looks like a deliberate dumping." The dogs were found Wednesday near a riverbank outside Gate City, near the Tennessee border.
The dogs including Rottweilers, German Sheperds, Labs, and a few small-breed dogs, were found in plastic trash bags and biohazard bags and some of the carcasses had spilled out, Holder said. The animals appeared to have been euthanized and had been dead about 2-5 days, he said.
Investigators found some toys and information in the bags--including a dog tag-- indicating that the animals were from outside Scott County, though Holder would not be more specific. An FBI agent was also called to the scene.
Crews used excavation equipment to remove the remains, which will be taken to a Roanoke company to be incenerated. "The cleanup has been completed and there are no environmental issues," said county emergency services coordinator Jeff Brickey.
How sad.... Just freaking pitiful, the only good news about the whole story is that the dogs weren't alive when they were dumped....
