Cat obsessed with water!

March 28th, 2005, 03:58 PM

Now, I might just be paranoid about this, but it appears as though my 12 year old female cat is obsessed with water!

She sits outside the bathtub and tried her best to get it and when she does, she just sits there and waits for someone to turn on the water so she can drink. She does have a full water dish downstairs with her food, so I wonder if it is just a case of laziness? Her brother died a few years ago of kidney failure and one of the symptoms was extreme thirst. She was checked out by a vet in the fall and nothing appeared to be wrong, so I might just be scared of her falling ill.

Anyone else have the same issue or can offer some advice?

Thanks! :)

I don't think it is all that unusual,2 of my cats drink water from the tap in the kitchen-sink,the bathtub is just a bit different
I too had a cat who died from UTI and I am a bit paranoid, always checking that all 3 of my cats pee properly and don't have full tight bladders.

Keep a good eye on her, see if she drinks elsewhere and pees regularly, but on the lighter side, my two girls, 3 1/2 love to get in the tub or sink to drink, even though fresh water is in the bowl 10-15 steps away :)

I agree with the observation of making sure she does use the litter box(pee) properly.

It's not unusual for kitties to watch water -basins, tubs, toilets, etc. amy little one likes to jump into thr bathtub and watch the water fall. I would monitor her water intake tho!

Mya is obsessed with water, whenever im in the bath she will sit on the side and watch the water, as well as the taps. She will also wait for the water to drain and lick the little puddles that are left GROSS!!!
Also my freinds cat Hamish he will actually get in the bathtub with her! water and all. he actually sits in the bathtub with my freind LOL!! And I thought cats hated water. :yuck:

Puss-Puss used to wait outside the shower for me. When I stepped out, she liked to lick the water from my legs.

'Stormie' my 2 year old kitty, will do the same at the tub....I'm never alone! She's either in my sink, in my tub or drinking out of the toilet! My little 'prima donna' lays on the floor at the water dish and dips her paw in the water and then drinks from her paw - this cat does the weirdest things when it comes to water! My other two cats don't do it. Go figure.

Like glassglass our kitties often wait in the bathroom when we shower and lick the water off our ankles when we get out!!they are fascinated with the water droplets and also the thrill of hopping into the deep tub... another mysterious place that they can explore. Your kitty must have some kind of association with the tub and drinking, and as long as he is drinking water, that is a wonderful thing for his health, especially if kidney disease is in his family... do you have a kitty litter box inside so that you can monitor if he is peeing regularly in good amounts?

Just one question: Has your cat always done this, or is it something new?

My cats love running water as well
I actualy just bought this dish that recirculates the water and has it fall over the sides of this done, so it is a constant stream ... i havn't given it to them yet, but i think they'll go nuts (if Justice lets them near it!)

Trouble our kitten LOVES the water! One time I Stuck her into the bathtub with warm water in it and some bath stuff and she stayed in there as long as i kept her in there, and after she got out and was dry, she was really soft, Our older cat tater, Loves to drink out of the sink/Bathtub etc, He loves it! You whould be surprised at how many cats love water, trouble loves it when somebody gets out of the shower and if you dangle your hair and get her wet or she will lick your legs, or even get in with you...So yeah, SHE LOVES the water! LOL So its just a thing your cat likes...
