A 2-month-old puppy is lucky to be alive Monday after a woman found her covered with oil and ticks.

The Arizona Humane Society responded to a home near 21st Street and St. Charles Avenue Monday morning to find a female Australian shepherd mix dehydrated with a high fever.

Aquilla Metcalf found the puppy in a Dumpster after she heard her crying.

She gave her a bath and pulled the ticks off of her fur.

Metcalf said she knows the person who abandoned the pup.

The Humane Society says the dog is fine and will be OK. They will watch her for a few days to monitor her recovery.

There is no word on what charges the former owners will face.
