BigDogLover February 19th, 2005, 12:20 PM Hi,
My name is Dar(short for Darcy) and my love for animals attracted me to this wonderful haven for discussion. On most days you'll find me arguing on the Mensa site or some other IQ club(I think I appreciate this one most). I may appear stoic and pompous at times, but I really don't mean it, it's just part of my nature. With proper nurturing from my new found pals in the pound I'm sure this beast will be tamed.
Woof Woof,
Dar.

twodogsandacat February 19th, 2005, 02:03 PM Well we aren't all Mensa members and sometimes we don't seem to care to much about spelling but that don't matter none. Welcome. Here's a recent family photo.
.
BigDogLover February 19th, 2005, 02:12 PM *smiles* Nice picture, can't wait for the baby pics. Would that be Dalton or Google that you are holding?
Dar.
twodogsandacat February 19th, 2005, 02:46 PM Neither. I just thought I couldn't waste this picture. It was originally titled 'Alabama Wedding Photo'. Funny if you don't live in Alabama.
Then again it's probably better than a real photo of me.
Bugsy February 19th, 2005, 02:49 PM Omg.. lmao :D Score: 2 for Twodogsandacat! What a great window for that shot :thumbs up
Welcome to the board bigdoglover :p
lezzpezz February 19th, 2005, 02:51 PM Oh thank heavens! I was sitting here absolutely flabbergasted by this picture and trying to think of something positive to say about the "lovely" couple without offending anybody! I am so glad it's not you and your "billybob" and now I can laugh outloud! Too funny! And on the other hand, a very sad statement, right down to the ciggy in the pregnant bride's hand :p
Bugsy February 19th, 2005, 03:06 PM I forgot about this email... until now! See what happens when you open a window! :D

twodogsandacat February 19th, 2005, 05:02 PM Thanks for holding back LeezerPeezer and thanks for that link Bugsy.
Having just got back from Georgia I recognize a few of those boys (not the relatives BTW). I will tell you though some of them have hearts as big as the sky. Of course I didn't understand half of what they said so maybe they weren't that nice after all. Still they talk purty.
.
TWilson9498 February 19th, 2005, 05:11 PM Although I AM from Alabama... I can say it is a fitting picture for the half of Alabama who live down long dark scary dirt roads, marry their cousins, ect.... It reminds me of a few people I have seen walking down the interstate around here... Pretty scary! ;)
CyberKitten February 19th, 2005, 05:41 PM Although I do have a great sense of humour (I think, haha), I think we'd probably remind ourselves that there are people with problems such as those expressed in the photo - poverty for one - in every jurisdiction in North America.
It reminds me though of the many people who have pets and claim financial problems as a reason for not neutering or spaying them.
Welcome Darcy or Dar!
BigDogLover February 20th, 2005, 07:34 AM Although I do have a great sense of humour (I think, haha), I think we'd probably remind ourselves that there are people with problems such as those expressed in the photo - poverty for one - in every jurisdiction in North America.
Welcome Darcy or Dar!
Yes there are people like this, fortunately though, Jerry and Maury are providing a joint effort in preserving the redneck way.
Thanks for the warm welcome,
Dar.

Mensa my posterior!
People who brag about having something, rarely do "have it". People who indeed "have it"..do not advertise.
My brother, Dan, was once a member of mensa. He quit because they bored him to death. I do not understand his intellect but I do know how lonely he is, we were raised together afterall. I also know he is far to busy (and it would bore him more..) to be on a webboard.
Being smart as he is...he has to keep busy.
Iggette February 21st, 2005, 04:22 AM Hey, Darcy Welcome aboard
Nice pup pic :)
Carina February 21st, 2005, 07:02 PM [QUOTE=BigDogLover]www.epiq.gr We not only meet Mensan status, we surpass it.

Nobody is impressed, or even cares. :)
Do tell about your impending puppy! I asked on the designer breeds thread. I have a friend here who pretty much knows the whole CN Dobie scene. What kennel is your little one out of?
happycats February 21st, 2005, 07:37 PM What are those things around thier tails ? (picture of puppies)
Carina February 21st, 2005, 07:48 PM What are those things around thier tails ? (picture of puppies)
Dar took the pictures away! :(
Darn. Taking your toys and going home?
happycats February 21st, 2005, 07:51 PM AWWW Carina did you scare bigdoglover away ??
glasslass February 21st, 2005, 07:59 PM I took another look at the picture before it was removed. Looked like rubber bands? I know they do that to sheep, but not puppies! What breeder does this?
Jackie467 February 21st, 2005, 08:17 PM glasslass, i never saw the pictures but what i understand is they were dobies correct? (not that it matters what kind of dog) I have heard of breeders banding dogs tails instead of having the surgury but in my oppinion and it's only my oppinion i think this is increadibly crule and it often takes days for the tails to fall off. a dobie (or any dog for that matter) should have it's tail docked surgically at about 3 days old before there is feeling in it. if done after this point it is really painful for the dog. and if you band the tails it is very easy for them to become infected. this practice makes me irate  .
Karin February 21st, 2005, 08:32 PM AWWW Carina did you scare bigdoglover away ??
Well throw Carina an extra treat tonight! Yeh!
Bigdoglover was here when I logged on a minute ago.
Geez..come here, post get to know the folks. Leave the stage acts for the Emmy awards!
Mensa my gluteus maximus! How's that? - LR
(go ahead Lucky Rescue, I know..I know...smooches!) *could not help myself*
happycats February 21st, 2005, 08:37 PM All the puppies had what looked like rubber bands (some red some blue) wrapped around the base of all thier tails, they also looked like they were in a kiddie pool with no blankets or bedding of any kind.
Bigdoglover claimed it was a reputable breeder, yet when asked who the breeder is, bigdoglover skipped out!!
IMO BYB!!!! how sick, especially for someone so highly "intelligent" "mensa" as Darcy claims to be, to be dumb enough to use a BYB!!!
Takes all kinds I guess *sigh* those poor poor puppies
Carina February 21st, 2005, 08:42 PM AWWW Carina did you scare bigdoglover away ??
Oopsie. Sorry.
I didn't see the bands y'all were talking about!
But I really DO have a friend here who is in Dobies and I mentioned this thread to her. She said she knows pretty much everyone who would have a three week old litter on the ground (serious breeders, that is) and couldn't think of anyone with a 3 week old rainbow litter
Lucky Rescue February 21st, 2005, 08:44 PM Bigdoglover claimed it was a reputable breeder
Someone with 4 adult dogs who is breeding 2 litters a year would hardly be considered reputable. I think the odds that all dogs would be championed and health tested against genetic defects of this breed are remote.
Yes, it's a shame how furious people get when you point out that they are patronizing a backyard breeder, instead of sticking around to be educated - especially someone who said others should be educated about this very subject. Oh well...when it comes down to "I want" anything can be rationalized.
I really hope those puppies were just on that slick surface for purposes of taking pics. Puppies who are raised that way can become "swimmers".:(
Jackie467 February 21st, 2005, 08:45 PM yeah sounds like the tails were being banded. i don't consider any person who bands tails a reputable breeder and have never heard of a breeder who shows dogs that would do that. none of the dobies we got breeders would do that, and my stepdad showed (not dobies) but he has never heard of a breeder that shows doing this either. I think it's an awful practice, i at least hope the puppies were only about a week old at the absolute most.
poor poor puppies.

LMFAO! *I meant to say burro*
Carina February 21st, 2005, 09:15 PM LMFAO! *I meant to say burro*
Did someone say "burrito?"
sniffsniffsniffsniff.....yum yum.
Karin I have a brother who is also waaaayyyyuh up there, intellect-wise. He'd probably find Mensa boring. He is a post graduate philosophy student, easing into being a professor, either at the university of Chicago, Toronto, or somewhere in Berlin.
He went to Germany for 6 months once; the time he figured it would take him that long to learn German well enough to read Kant and Neitsche (sp) in the original text, and ditto Mexico in order to learn to read some of the South American philosophers.
Now he goes back to both countries periodically to teach classes (in those languages) - he is such an academic but he is my little brother and I wuv him.
I cannot imagine him being able to spend much time on internet forums!

Nah na na nah Nah! My brother beats your brother! My brother Dan quit working for U of Fla. 2 years ago..he is a nuclear engineer by trade, digital design inventor and has been working his first & only contract since striking out on his own, for Keesler Aerospace. He is the dude who designed the new sensor's for the shuttle program, so there will be no more Columbia type accidents. (also for the space station too) He also designed the robot mine sweeper for Afghanistan and the cardiac pace maker that needs no recharging.
Too bad we are not on speaking terms anymore. He built my computer which has issues, but most important, he would not let me stay with him in his concrete house for the hurricanes because of Ciara. This broke my heart.
No games here, I'm proud of your brother too! Wanna trade? My brother is clueless in other areas, like family. I am proud of my brother but he leaves the entire family shaking their heads in wtf attitude.
Internet play does not exist with him, does not even understand why we do it. Go figure?
Carina February 21st, 2005, 09:54 PM Luckily my bro was brought up with a strict work ethic and lots of animals! So he is pretty grounded and very well socialised. He went through lots of obedience training (I changed his diapers) and was taught proper bite inhibition early on, so he is acceptable in most public situations. :p
He has all sorts of arcane distinctions in the academic/philosophy world, but has yet to parlay any of it into a serious income. He gets grants from all sorts of odd places and so far has made a pretty nice tax-free income just for studying things like "What do we really mean when we say "chair"" but he still lives like a grad student at 35.
But when I go visit him in Chicago he knows to clear a spot and take the Blue Stuff out of the toilet bowl because I am bringing a dog! :D

I still want to trade! I am the baby of the clutch. My brother Dan left home shortly after my father up rooted us from the keyes to New York. He basicaly raised himself afterwards, putting himself through college. We did not find each other again until 1989, when I moved back into the area.
I love him too, but he makes it hard to "reach" him. Dan is 52, gorgous and never married, wants a wife but is clueless. He is so smart, well to do, and lonely. I had to help him change a door knob on one door in his house back in 1990, he could not figure it out, yet his mind works on a level I cannot understand. I feel for him, he's got "it"..but is lacking in all areas we take for granted.
I like having less working brain cells, makes me work harder and appreciate more.
greaterdane February 22nd, 2005, 12:38 AM I know in the UK banding is illegal and alot of places just do it to save the money from having the dock surgically done. Some breeders even use fishing line. My thoughts are that it would be more painful especially when the pup is over a week old and can feel pain. It would be like me not wanting a toe so i put a band around it and hope it falls off. With what I have read, the bands are put on right after the puppy is born and does not take long for the tail to fall off. I am not sure how old those pups are in the picture, but my glance before it was removed looked as though they were older then 2-3 days. I have been on about 50 sites looking into it and as long as the tail is kept clean then apparently it is safe. I just hope those puppies are very very young and the breeder just isnt trying to save a few bucks.
Carina February 22nd, 2005, 07:26 AM Apparently banding the tails is quite accepted practice. There's special tools and techniques and some breeders do it themselves because they can get the correct tails that way. Quite often vets don't know how to do a proper dock, and if the dog is to be shown then it needs a second docking (which is an amputation) at the same time ears are done.
My Dobie friend tells me it is completely painless, clean, and efficient as long as it's done by someone who knows what they're doing, and it's done at the right age, not too young.
I'm just repeating what she told me, she sent me some sites and info.
Just FIY on banding, not necessarily cruel or just to save money.
mastifflover February 22nd, 2005, 01:47 PM From what I was told about banding is basically what Carina said but if done to early can be a health risk ot the pup and personally I think it is cruel. I am not a big fan of docking or cropping but with certain breeds it is better for them healthwise.
Carina February 22nd, 2005, 02:29 PM My friend says between 7-10 days, and puppies show no signs of discomfort at all. If they were very distressed, the mama dog would be unsettled and upset, but apparently if done properly, this does not happen at all.
Mind you, I'm of the opinion that it's generally unecessary to crop and dock....I wanna tailed Rottweiler one day!
