no sammie I don't remember that one.

I lasted 1 day in pathfinders, the head lady killed a bat with a broom right in front of all of us, I got mad, called her a murderer, so she called my mom to come get me right away. (said I was causing a scene, and upsetting the other girls)

I refused to ever go back, as much as my mom tried to make me.

No idea how I landed in this topic, but that actually is true, studies have been done and been written up in the last 2 years proving that.
And by the way.. The advice you gave about babies and cats, and how being exposed makes them less likely to get asthma... Are you really serious or just totally clueless? That is so not true...

I don't know who told you that bs, but MY own daughter has asthma, she has to go to a pulmonary specialist once a month, more as needed. I believe if that was true he would not have insisted I do something about sending her to her Grandmother's house because of her cat... ( we lived there when she was born, so she was exposed to cats at birth ) I'm sure he wouldn't have insisted on this, had it not been true. When it comes to my daughter and her Dr. I will take his word considering the fact that listening to him and giving her the treatments she needs as needed has kept her from having attacks since she was 2, she is now almost 5. We were told she had asthma at 2 weeks of age, they said she may outgrow it, she may not. As of now, everything looks pretty good but she takes breathing treatments 4 times a day, is tested for allergies once a month with little shots on her back... things of that nature... so me personally, I will stick with someone who does the research for a living and has made my daughters life better for her and much easier for me.

You know, there is no need to be rude. This information is from the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.I would not call that the rude initials you used.I also would stick with someone who does the "research for a living" as you say and is published in a peer reviewed journal.Maybe, just maybe these people know more than you or your own doctor?

Multiple Pets May Decrease Children's Allergy Risk
My-Dog.info > Getting a Dog or Puppy

Press Release: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, August 27 2002

Children raised in a house with two or more dogs or cats during the first year of life may be less likely to develop allergic diseases as compared with children raised without pets, according to a study in the August 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

"The striking finding here is that high pet exposure early in life appears to protect against not only pet allergy but also other types of common allergies, such as allergy to dust mites, ragweed, and grass," says Marshall Plaut, M.D., chief of the allergic mechanisms section at NIAID. "Other studies have suggested a protective effect of pet exposure on allergy and asthma symptoms, but generally have looked only at whether pet exposure reduced pet allergy. This new finding changes the way scientists think about pet exposure; scientists must now figure out how pet exposure causes a general shift of the immune system away from an allergic response."

In their paper, lead author Dennis R. Ownby, M.D., of the Medical College of Georgia, and colleagues suggest that bacteria carried by pets may be responsible for suppressing the immune system's allergic response. These bacteria release molecules called endotoxins, and endotoxins are believed to shift the developing immune system away from responding to allergens through a class of lymphocytes called Th-2 cells, which are associated with allergic reactions. Instead, endotoxins may stimulate the immune system to activate Th-1 cells, which may block allergic reactions.

The researchers followed 474 children from birth to six or seven years of age. When the children were one year old, the researchers contacted parents by telephone to find out how many pets were in the home. When the children were two years old, researchers measured the level of dust mite allergen in their bedrooms. When the children were six or seven, the researchers tested them for allergic antibodies to common allergens by two approaches - a skin prick test and a blood measurement.

After adjusting for factors such as dust mite allergen levels, parental smoking, and current dog or cat ownership, the researchers found that children exposed to two or more dogs or cats during the first year of life were on average 66-77 percent less likely to have any allergic antibodies to common allergens, as compared with children exposed to only one or no pets during their first year.

"Our findings suggest an area of research with many possibilities, one that could potentially bear fruit over the next decade or so," says Dr. Ownby. "If we could find out exactly what it is about pets or the bacteria they carry that prevents the allergic response, scientists might be able to develop a new allergy therapy based on that knowledge."

I don't know who told you that bs,

so me personally, I will stick with someone who does the research for a living and has made my daughters life better for her and much easier for me.

Did they have any ideas why a child at that age would have asthma? How did they diagnose it?It is very difficult to diagnose in kids under 5 years, especially in babies, some other conditions have similar symptoms.

We were told she had asthma at 2 weeks of age,

LL1, I tend to believe what you say, as I had 6 cats when my son was born, he is 4 now and is not allergic to anything, has never had an ear infection, and has never been on antibiotics. (his Dr, told me it was probably his exposure to the cats. that has caused this).

I have also heard the leading cause of asthma in children is smoking while pregnant , and exposure to second hand smoke, while pregnant, and or exposure to second hand smoke by an infant or child. (my Dr also told me this)

Iggette, YEAH you did it !!

We were told she had the asthma while living in Ft. Knox Ky, while Army Dr's are not the best in the world, we were told this because she was going in and out of the hospital ALL the time with wheezing, bronchitis, pneumonia, ect. When we came home to Alabama for Christmas just after she was born she began to have chest retractions very badly so I took her to the emergency room and they admitted her in Childrens and Womens... A hospital that kids are brought to from as far away as TN, GA, MS, LA, ect because it is that good and well known, they kept her there for another 2 weeks and started her on a chamber for babies that you squirt the albuterol in the end since they are too small to use an inhaler... Now, myself nor my ex husband smoked, I didn't smoke while I was pregnant, I couldn't stand the smell because I would get sick, we never allowed people who smoked to come in our home even when I was pregnant because I would puke.... so that is not a factor, noone in my family smokes period.. So from the hospital we then went to the pulmonary spc. and have been there ever since, seeing as how I moved back home the following month. Her asthma is better here than it was there, since that visit to the hosptial she hasn't went back, she has had an attack here and there, but not like before.. Now about children under the age of 5, I said earlier that they said she would most likely out grow it, because you're right, it is hard to diagnose a child of that age. They made her take steriods for nearly 3 months to help her lungs get stronger, perhaps that is what made her better, I do not know. I never said I know more than anyone else, nor did I say MY Doctor did, I said I will stick with what worked for MY daughter because her health is more important to me than what someone has read written by someone else. There is research for everything in this world, that doesn't always make it true. Have you not seen medicines recalled ALL the time because the previous "research" was wrong and new research said they were unsafe? Yes, research is great, it saves lives all the time, but for now, I personally will stick with what works for MY kids, not 100 other kids because those aren't mine. I am more concerned with what helps my own child than I am someone else's. Now, don't get me wrong I care about kids in general, but just like any mother, my own kid comes before someone elses. You are more than welcome to do what you want with your kids and the research you have learned, and I will do the same with mine.. Fair enough?

I guess we never truly know what causes some illnesses in our children.
No Dr. actually can pinpoint it.
I have heard peanut allergies are caused by eating peanuts during pregnancy.
But that isn't so.

My bosses son has had asthma since birth, they have no animals and no one in the house smokes, his son's Dr. said it may have been caused by the new carpet installed in the nursery, 2 weeks prior to his birth, he claims there are so many toxic chemicals in new carpet.

What I am trying to say is, no one really knows the exact cause of some illnesses, maybe genes, envoirnment, food.
No point in arguing over something even a Dr. can't say for certain the cause is.

TWilson9498
February 27th, 2005, 02:39 PM
I agree, like I said before, if you think the research is true and you have children than by all means do what you see best for your child. I would expect a mother or father to always do what is best for their child, which is what I am doing for mine. I found something that worked with her Dr. and that is what I will continue to do, but there are kids who are diagnosed with asthma at a very early age and continue to have it their entire lives. The point is do what you want for your child, but no matter what option you take always be prepared for new research to tell you something different. I on the other hand, would not let my child be used for research, I disagree with that, but others don't. That is why it's called an opinion you are entitled to yours, as I am to mine.

LL1

Yes,my doctor has told me that as well. And I was not posted my opinion, but a well respected scientific study.

I am curious to know if the physician who told you that smoking while pregnant/ second hand smoke is the number one cause of asthma in children is a pulmonologist?

He is actually not correct. Perhaps s/he was attempting to influence smoking patterns in the home?

The actual "cause" of asthma is still idiopathic (unknown). The essential cause of the lung abnormality in asthma is not yet known, although healthcare professionals have established that it is a special type of inflammation of the airway that leads to:

contraction of airway muscles
mucus production
swelling in the airways

Now, as for TRIGGERS if asthma, smoke is right up there but still not by itself the leading one. In actual fact, a recent landmark study demonstrated that while rates of smoking have declined in the western world (thank Gawd!), the rates of asthma have gone up. This has disproved many a hypothesis put forward by researchers seeking to look at the correlation between asthma and smoking or second hand smoke. I would not let smoking off the hook but anyone with asthma needs to examine EVERY potential trigger in and outside the home. The main triggers are:

Allergens, such as:
pollen
mold
animal dander
smoke - primary and secondary
house dust/dust mites
cockroaches
certain foods or sulfites used as food and beverage preservatives

Respiratory infections often act as a major aggravating trigger, since they irritate the airways, nose, throat, lungs, and sinuses. Although it is well-known that irritation often precedes attacks of asthma, the exact biological mechanism for this is not yet known.

Pollution - chemicals and even wood burning stoves. (tho they do give wonderful heat!)
Exercise
Sensitivity to certain meds (aspirin) - this is where one of my coworkers published key work in Lancet.

I hope this helps. I am concerned a doctor would make such a sweeping comment like that. If you would PM me the name, I might find out what his or her credentials are - it is rather worrying for me.

My sister in law had problems with her newborn's breathing and he had to be on a monitor,I was told that gaining too much weight during pregnancy can also be hard on the baby too.She also smoked as did her husband.

In case you are unaware, it is YOUR opinion that someone's research is or is not correct. Who are you to say it is correct? So they studied a few hundred people... ok great, what about the billions of others they did not?! It is your opinion, there is research that will disagree with what you agree with... there fore it becomes an opinion and not a fact. Perhaps you should understand that people are entitled to "believing" what ever they chose, that is why we call this a free country.
