It is people like this that give all pit owner's a bad name. First he abuses his dog, his dog attacks a neighbours dog and then the dog freezes to death. The only one who seemed to care was the neighbour (god bless her).

This punk needs jail. The max.

WATERBURY -- A pit bull owner is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after his dog was found frozen to death Monday in the back yard of a North End duplex.

The man's name is being withheld until an arrest warrant is issued, though it is not the first time man and dog have been involved with the police.

"They found the dog dead, they found poor living conditions, no food and just a plastic dog house," said police spokesman Sgt. Christopher Corbett of the visit by animal control officers to a home on Santoro Street.

Neighbor Danielle Hellman said she had been trying to get the city to intervene on the dog's behalf for more than three weeks when she finally found the dog's body in her back yard.

On Dec. 29, Hellman called police after the pit bull got loose and attacked her American Eskimo. Police who responded could not find the dog that evening and no action was taken.

On Dec. 30, the pit bull returned and acted aggressively toward Hellman and her dog. It ran into her kitchen where Hellman was able to confine it using a baby gate until police and animal control officers arrived.

The dog was impounded and its owner, who according to police does not live at the Santoro Street address, collected the animal on Jan. 13 and was cited for letting it roam.

Hellman said after the dog's return she grew increasingly worried about its condition.

"I was afraid of the dog, but I was feeding it," she said. The plastic-covered dog house frequently lost its roof in the high winds and the straw used as bedding inside was strewn about the yard.

Corbett said the police forensics unit went to the house Monday to document the conditions in preparation for an arrest warrant for animal cruelty. Dogs are not to be kept outside for long periods in extreme conditions.

The animal cruelty charge is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000.

and no more than a year in prison.

Forget the fine and jail time. put him outside in a plastic dog house no food and no real shelter for 1 year and see how he enjoys it. He should not be allowed inside and can fend for himself no matter what the weather. Suffer *******.

I think the neighbour should be commended for trying to take care of the dog. As for the idiot, these are the people who are causing the problems, and I hope someone focuses on the conditions this dog was kept in, not that it was a pitbull.

Ya know its disgusting that someone who does a petty crime gets more jail time or an outrageous fine for something pidly(sp?) but when an animal dies or is abused and neglected, the owner gets away with MURDER!!!!!!!!!

At least it looks like the police are taking it seriously NOW. Forensics can't be cheap so it looks like they are attempting to build a real case against the 'owner'.
