Pit bulls have been involved in several recent attacks in Colorado, renewing efforts to ban them statewide. Are pit bulls getting a bad rap? Owners say that smaller dogs are more likely to bite and the media is blowing the pit bull attacks out of proportion. What do you think? Are certain breeds more vicious than others? It is the dogs fault or the owner's fault?

YES - it's not the 'BREED' of dog, it's the 'BREED' of the human responsible for the dog/animal !!!

Most pit bull owners just want to feed thier ego's. They use owning a pit bull as an extension to thier personnality. They walk around wanting to draw attention, intimidate or act tough. Yes, there are exceptions and many responsible owners. It's just been my personal observation that most people use this breed to intimidate. I'd like to see them banned because I'm afraid for my kids. Who's going to pay the high medical bills resulting from an attack? If you want to own such a breed, lets pass a law that you have to carry 1/2 million in liability insurance, take classes in owning a vicious breed, and getting licensed through the county. Pit bulls serve no purpose. You may as well get a Hyena, or Lion as a "pet". Just my 2 cents.

I wish I had a nickel for every news story I read about Pitbulls attacking people. I'd be rich. I'm not opposed to folks having them but they should be held responsible whenever they get loose and kill or maim someone.
Sincerely,

Cliff

Pit bulls are getting a bad rap. If you "google" pit bull you will find that "maulings" and "attacks" are in the papers everyday. But what you dont see is the number of times these are false reports, not actually pit bulls. What you will hear in the media reports is irresponsible parents crying about the fact that their child was bit...when they were no where in sight of the child to stop an incident. Statistics prove the majority of dog bites happen in the home, by the family dog. The remaining incidents are due to either irresponsible ownership or irresponsible parenting. To ban the breeds of dogs which are "pit bull" is putting a bandaid on the situation of irresponsible owners. These people will get a different breed to be irresponsible with, and we responsible owners will be without our family pet. I have owned my pit bull for 11 incident free years, raised my family with her, and to have the government tell me my dog is to dangerous to be part of the community is ludicrous. it's not the pitbull's fault,it's the owner's fault!!!!!!!!!and i stay with that!!!!!!you can make every dog dangerous, even a poodle,if you don't socialise them, not feeding them and kicking and hitting the dog they will be agressive and that's the owners fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to let people know how wonderful, loving, caring, loyal, and precious pit bulls are. I am the proud owner of 3 pit bulls, 2 girls and a boy, and I couldn't imagine life without them. People who think that pit bulls are vicious, awful animals have obviously not done their research. I can say from experience that pit bulls are great with children of all ages, fun-loving animals. The stories you hear about a pit bull attacking probably have to do with how they were trained. Dogs are like kids, they are born a blank slate, and you teach them what they need to know and how to behave. If the owner of a pit has them fight other dogs, doesn't feed them, beats them, or does anything else to torture the dog, you can't blame the dog for that. Owners are at fault for not fulfilling their responsibility to their dog. Please help to reverse the bad rap that pit bulls get. They are amazing animals, and are no more threatening than any other breed.

kn0ylx, I'm sad for you. You are one of those types that don't educate yourselves. You make opinions based on everything you see on the news. If at some point in your life you decide to educate yourself on the pitbull/APBT topic- try www.kobesbullybreeds@groups.msn.com. Also know that in a recent ten year bite study, cocker spaniels ranked in the top five- the only thing that keeps them from being next on the dog to "kill off" next list, is they're size. I've worked in and around veterinary medicine most of my life- I've seen dogs come in starved and beaten by OUR SOCIETY. Pitbulls that have been set on fire, and still wag their tails while you try to remove the crusted burnt skin from they're bodies- never once in all my years have I had one try to bite. I see everyday how people are misinformed- I'm sorry that you had to be one of those people. I bet you never even knew that some of the top search and rescue dogs in the WORLD, are APBT'S, and AST'S. You want the breed banned, thats fine you have a right to your opinion, but it shouldn't be one sided- what about the people in your comunnity that abuse these animals, that starve them, that beat them with bricks, or douse them with lighter fluid- I would think that if this was done to a child in our society- he or she may not be of right mind either- a life is what you make of it, or what is made of you. People make most opinions out of fears, maybe your just scared of something your not really educated on. If it's the negative media you realy on- your only getting part of the story. -pr_mantis@hotmail.com

Check out this link and you tell me? Pitbulls are good dogs. The owners are the ones at fault. So please check this link out and then express your opinions!

Pit Bulls are like having a loaded weapon available. Their mental state is unbalanced at best. What is the purpose of such a violent animal? I haven't heard of any deaths from Cocker Spaniels or any other small or medium sized breeds. I believe pit bulls should be banned in Colorado, and an effort made to erraticate this dangerous animal. Just My Opinion.................

It is my expierence that ANY dog can bite. I own 2 pitbulls and they are the sweetest dogs I have ever owned! Last Monday my house wa ROBBED and the dogs were still there though all my things were gone... VICIOUS DOGS?!! I believe it has alot to do with the owners, mine have always been around childre, we go to dog parks, they are very well trained. Yes someday either dog may bite someone and that is something that I will have to deal with, but my dogs are not taunted, they are bif babies. I was bitten by a chow when I was younger as my sister was bit by a cocker spaniel. Those dogs never got put down, nothing ever happened to them. People don't look at the good things this brred does. They are Great CSI dogs, they are more intelligent than most according to the ADBA website, they are mostly animal friendly and they have profound human skills and affection! In the state of Co. it takes 3 attacks for the BREED to be labeled as Vicious. 3! So what about the damn chows and cocker spaniels? why only Pits and Rotts or Dobies? To say in the stsate we can not own a pit bull is a disgrace of the constitution. We have rights. NOW WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO WITH THEM? most people are afraid to fight and I am one that would indeed move out of Co. if that is what they choose to do. My dogs are a part of my family. Banning our dogs is the next thing to telling us how many kids we can have and what religion to be.!!!!

Well we know they are. They are the only dogs that bite or attack, they are ticking timebombs, they have locking jaw mechanisims, they are not mentally balanced. This is all bullsh** and we know it but when you have the little man running around screaming ban pit bulls, you created a mania if you only tell one side of the story.

Of course they are. The media LOVES when a "pit bull" attacks someone. It sells papers and then they just feed lies into soceity.

Here is some testimony from the commitee hearings against the pit bull ban in Ontario (http://www.ontla.on.ca/hansard/committee_debates/38_parl/session1/legassembly/M009.htm#P107_8115)

I have lived with an American Staffordshire Terrier (one of the targeted breeds) for 9 years. She is a wonderful example of how GENTLE these dogs are.

People just need to be educated on the facts and not the fear.
