SarahJane January 8th, 2005, 12:08 AM Oh my god... I'm really not sure how to feel, I've been crying tears of both joy and confusion tonight... My parents came over tonight with a surprise guest...a 2 and a half MONTH old male pug puppy for me and all of his supplies!!
I had told them that I couldn't get a puppy... did they not hear me? And on top of everything else, it's from a PET STORE. Did they not hear me tell them how EVIL the pet stores are??Of course, at the pet store they told my parents their dogs dont come from puppy mills.
Well, crap, cause I'm in love with this baby now and my mom got a pup because one of her best friends works and had a pug puppy, so she figures I can too? And thought I would be so happy?
But I hate to admit... part of me so is... and I've been researching all night how I can do this. The baby boy is sleeping on my chest as we speak!!! He is very healthy seeming and such a funny boy.... we are going to the vet first thing tomorrow.
I've attached a pic. What the heck am I going to do? I don't think I can possibly give him up.  :o
CyberKitten January 8th, 2005, 12:48 AM He is a cutie!! I hope everything works out at the vet!! It is kind of double edge dword for you though isn;t it?
Sneaky2006 January 8th, 2005, 02:32 AM I'm so happy you got your pug, but I'm sooo sorry that they didn't listen :(
I don't even talk with my family about this sort of thing anymore... my BIL already made the comment about breeding Yukon cause his sister has a pitty she wants pups from, of course I wouldn't let him touch my pooch with a ten foot pole (not to mention he's going to be neutered soon!) and obviously everything I've said about BYB thus far has gone in one ear and out the other... we just can't win I guess.
I couldn't give him up either, what a cutie  ... it's not his fault people don't listen :(
chico2 January 8th, 2005, 09:01 AM SarahJane, how could you possibly give him up...like someone said,it is not his fault he was sold to a pet-store.Hopefully he'll get a clean bill of health :thumbs up
My son got his JRT from a pet-shop for $500,an impulse-buy,after his divorce, luckily she's always been healthy..
I,like everyone else here,am 150% against buying from Pet-Shops,that is why I don't even set foot in one..
Good Luck with the little one..he's incredibly cute
badger January 8th, 2005, 09:08 AM Put it this way. Time is only a concept. You were meant to have this dog and there is no 'later' (or perfect situation IMHO). You can do it!
Lucky Rescue January 8th, 2005, 09:31 AM Such cuteness is not to be borne!!
It's too bad the puppymills are being rewarded, but you've got him now.
I hope it works out!
meb999 January 8th, 2005, 10:46 AM Congrats on the pup SarahJane, he's absolutely GORGEOUS!
My father bought a Springer Spaniel from a petstore too (he got jipped by a breeder and bought him on impulse). Although I'm sure the pup is from a Puppymill, he's got a clean bill of health, and is an absolutely amazing dog. My dad keeps telling me to stop looking into breeders and start going to the petstores
I'm not sure how I would feel if my parents showed up at the door with a boxer pup....but one thing is for sure, this little guy is with you now, and it's good to know that he wasn't picked up by some jack-$*# who knows nothing about the breed and might be violent or who knows what else.
He's one of the lucky ones.
I'm sure you'll do fine juggling a puppy and work, especially since your BF comes home for lunch!!
again, GONGRATS! He's beautifull and you'll do great! :thumbs up
meb999 January 8th, 2005, 10:53 AM Of course, at the pet store they told my parents their dogs dont come from puppy mills.
They ALL say that!
the place where my dad got his pup told him that too. When I went round Christmas time to look for a gift for my dad's cutie, I was looking at the puppies (absolute torture...) and the lady came up to me and said: 'you should come back next week, we'll be getting a whole bunch of puppies FOR THE CHRISTMAS RUSH!!!'
No breeder in his right mind would give his pups to a petstore...
Sorry about the rant!! the important thing is that this guy is with you now, even if he has a sketchy background, that's not his fault!!
Good luck and keep us posted!
lil_kirk January 8th, 2005, 11:01 AM Oh my goodness he is so adorable! Reminds me of my sisters baby pug!
I agree--it's not his fault where he was sold--he's just lucky he is with you and not with someone who bought him for fun for xmas but didn't really want him want him.
While he may be more work---you'll grow together and learn together. I'll ask my sister what pug training book she has---it's been a wonder for them and their furbaby is doing great with her training--they work all day and leave her alone with toys and she is just fine! You can do this--don't fret--it's good training for when you have your own babies :D
BoxerRescueMTL January 8th, 2005, 12:10 PM Congrats Sarah-Jane! Look at it this way, that despite your hatred for puppymills and your determination not to buy from a petstore, and your decision that you wanted an adult..this little bugger  still found his way to you. It's fate. You'll be just fine. He is one lucky little pug.
BoxerRescueMTL January 8th, 2005, 12:11 PM oh and what's his name??????????????
Bugsy January 8th, 2005, 12:22 PM Congratulations! Sounds like something any Mom would've done. She found a way to make you happy (indexed in the Mom Manual) :p
Look at it this way... better he found a home with you. You've waited and wanted him sooo much & will give him a forever home.
Sooo.... what did you name the little sweetheart http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoticons4u/love/302.gif ?
mona_b January 8th, 2005, 04:21 PM OMG,what a cutie patootie he is.
Congtats on your new baby. And I know it upsets the heack out of you on where he was bought. And I know you could never give him up.Just give him all the love you have. And he is in a much loving home. And we know if there comes a time he has some health issues, you will not give up on him.
Yeah,so what's his name?
goldenblaze January 8th, 2005, 05:48 PM That little puppy is adorable, from someone who is going through the same thing after learning about the mill my golden came from think like I do. This puppy is one of millons that needed a home reguardless and you can give this one in a millon the home he is meant to have! :) Good Luck and enjoy your new puppy. :)
Lucky Rescue January 8th, 2005, 10:33 PM Don't think we'll be seeing much of SarahJane for awhile. She's too busy wiping up puddles to post. :p
Bugsy January 8th, 2005, 10:38 PM Don't think we'll be seeing much of SarahJane for awhile. She's too busy wiping up puddles to post. :p
LMAO.... :D
mrmilo January 9th, 2005, 09:06 AM SarahJane, I can really feel for you. If everyone had the same feelings about pet ownership as you have we wouldn't have a problem. Now that you have the little pup, don't you feel guilty whatever you do, you have done nothing wrong. I truly hope this works out for you. Maybe you should print these posts for your parents so this is the last time they do this to you.
doggy lover January 9th, 2005, 11:05 AM Enjoy him its to late to do anything now, he is lucky he got you for a mum.
SarahJane January 9th, 2005, 12:04 PM Well, I have a ten-minute break from baby... who will be named Herbie the Love Pug
He has been a handfull of the most delightful kind. I feel like a new mom, no sleep... hardly any time to shower and eat...
He is ALREADY going outside! He still pees inside but has taken to pooping (and peeing as well) outside. We are really going for this full force, with all we've got... up and down 4 flights of stairs every 2 hours! John will come back from work for those periods for the next little while to keep this up. :)
The first night we had him in a crate... he stayed clean all night but it broke my heart, he really wasnt happy in there. Last night we tuckered him out and he feel asleep on his bed in the baby-gated kitchen. no peep from him till 6:30 AM! Then we went straight outside and he pooped and peed. WHAT A GOOD BOY! But hew acts fast and then comes jumping up to my leg to get me to pick him up and wrap him in a towel. He then shivers a bit till we get back in :(
He is quite the little chewer.. of toes, and he LOVES to chew our hair when we pick him up, lol! His chews HURT with those brand dew little baby teeth! lol But of course we knew that would be part of puppyhood. He has tons of toys to chew instaead of us. :p
Only two concerns... he has brought up his food twice. Last night after we came home from my parents place, I gave him a treat and a few minutes later, a few pieces came up with his saliva. Same thing this morning after breakfast. But he really seems to feel fine and great after, he just breaks my heart when he heaves and stuff before he brings up a bit of food. We couldn't get an appt. to the vet till tomorrow night, should we be extremely concerned?
The other thing is hard to explain, he makes this really weird noise when he's excited that seems to come from his digestive system, like a swallowing noise that sounds like gurgling water or a hot water bottle. It has me rather worried. :(
He is a VERY smart and funny boy...learning so fast and cracking us up. He is also the MOST darling little thing when he curls up and falls asleep on our lap.
I feel like I've been dreaming for the last 3 days!! So happy but quite the nervous mommy.
Thank you all so much for your kind and supportive words... my parents have been scolded but they still see the joy in my heart, so... ;)
The real test will be tomorrow when we work. I don't know how I'll be able to leave him! I know my bf and my mom will be coming over, but I'm his mommy....
twinmommy January 9th, 2005, 12:20 PM Congratulations on the baby!!!! I know he is not what you initially wanted or expected, but...sometimes the best parties are surprise parties!!! Good luck to you and Herbie!! And yes, while it bugs you that your parents encouraged puppy mills (sigh) you can't be responsible for their actions, don't beat yourself up about it, enjoy your new puppy, this little guy is your for a reason!! He's very lucky!!! :)
I wouldn't worry about the vomiting too much, once or twice--and it seems like it was a spit-up more than projectile (if we're going to get graphic :) ) could be the excitement, the change of food from what he was on the pet store, or maybe he just couldn't digest the treat, what was it?
congrats again
Katherine1 January 9th, 2005, 12:40 PM The real test will be tomorrow when we work. I don't know how I'll be able to leave him! I know my bf and my mom will be coming over, but I'm his mommy....
Congrats! If you are like me, he has already stolen your heart. I know what you mean about leaving him. We got Molly last Thursday morning (she is a 1 and half year old lab) and I had not left her at all untill today. We went out for breakfast and hubby said she had to learn to be by herself for short periods of time in case I have to go to the school for the kids or something. I took her out right before we had to leave -brought her in and gave her a treat and told her to be a good girl. It broke my heart because I could hear her crying after I shut the door. We were gone less than 2 hours and she was so happy to see us. LOL I think that I was tramatized more than she was. I checked the house and no accidents and she didn't get into anything either. Gave her lots of hugs and another treat for being a good girl.
It will take some adjusting as he is still a baby but he will learn and just think about how nice it will be to go home at the end of your work day with that cuddly furbaby to love you.
lil_kirk January 9th, 2005, 02:55 PM I'm so glad to hear it is going well with Herbie. He's so cute!
As for the noises--get ready! Pugs are noisy noisy dogs--only not in the sense you're thinking!!! They pass gas, burp, snort, snore, sneeze and do pretty much every other thing you would consider to check off on the "real man" list! On the bright side--they rarely bark!! :D
You're going to love him!
mrmilo January 9th, 2005, 02:58 PM LOL, sounds like my kind of dog ;)
Rainy January 12th, 2005, 01:21 AM I am afraid I need to insist on Herbie the lovepug updates and pics! I'm having withdrawls here "snort" :D
Sarahjane Herbie looks sooooo much like my sisters "Mugsy"when he was a baby! She used to be my roomate before moving to Toronto and I miss them both
I love the name btw! Herbie is very lucky to have you.Congrats!
CarlaD January 12th, 2005, 11:09 AM He is way too cute!
Good luck and have fun with him!
I can't wait to see some more pictures!
mastifflover January 12th, 2005, 11:38 AM Sarahjane everything happens for a reason and maybe this little cutie patootie belongs with you. We know how you feel about pet stores and byb and mills but you have him and it is not his fault where he came from. So love him and give him a great home that is all you have to do now. Pugs are noisy little fellows I worked with a girl who used to bring hers to work and he was so funny snoring and snorting and sneezing. We are lucky in some film offices we get to bring our kids to work when we shoot at nights. Good luck and the little pukes are nothing to be concerned about. But smart to take him and have a general check up. You will be a great mom and we are always here for moral support.
meb999 January 12th, 2005, 11:57 AM We all know you're probably knee deep in puddles and piles, but your little cutie pie has captured our hearts..and we need pictures!!!
I hope everything is going well with little Herbie, everytime I come on the board, this post is my first stop! I love looking at that picture of him...soooo cute! Must make all your problems fade away to look at that face!!

Lucky Rescue January 14th, 2005, 01:21 PM Those pics *almost* make me want a puppy. Sarahjane, wanna trade for a 75lb lardbutt?
I just had to lighten up the last pic so Herbie's precious little "pug-mug" is clearer.:D
