Dread January 6th, 2005, 04:05 AM Hi everyone, I've been reading this forum for a while now and finally decided it was time I post. There is one thing that is getting lost in the shuffle and that is pitbulls in shelters across the province. Bill 132 has much bigger implications than simply muzzling and sterilizing pitbulls. While the bill is very unclear at this point, the most likely fate for pitbulls in shelters will be death, and this is how the bill is understood by shelters. It is sad enough that any dog is rotting away in our shelters but it is even sadder that these innocent pitbulls will perish on cold tables in shelters. Once the bill is introduced, pitbulls that are not adopted will be euthanized, and the fact is that there are hundreds of them currently in shelters and it doesn't help that most people aren't interested in adopting a pitbull during this dark time. I am a volunteer at the Niagara Falls SPCA and can attest to the fact that our shelters are filled with sweet and loving pitbulls that deserve a chance at life and do not die. I have studied the law and have a good understand of the political system from my university education in political science and the truth is, that at this point its pretty much a done deal, the standing commitee is made up of a majority of liberals and that's all bryant needs. So as lovers of these great creations of god we need to consider ways of saving these animals, a rescue is in order if you will. This is a time where pitbulls need to be adopted by homes that can in large numbers and those that are unable to take them in need to be saved. If you can't keep a pitbull, consider adopting with the plan of finding them a new loving forever home before the ban takes place and they are euthanized. We also need to find possible ways of transferring them from shelters in ontario to shelters or rescue groups outside of the province or even into the states. Sure going from one shelter to another is not ideal but atleast they will have the possibility of finding homes. Such a venture would require great effort so pitbull lovers and animal lovers in general need to think of ways of accomplishing this and pooling together their resources. God bless
OdinAndAlan January 6th, 2005, 06:46 AM Welcome to the forum Dread. I think if any large effort is to take place, there must be an entity (whether it be a person or an organization of some sort) doing the coordinating. That way efforts will be made where it will have the greatest impact.
bluntman January 6th, 2005, 07:50 PM Welcome Dread, You are right, thousands of loveable, adoptable pit's will face death under Bryants law, but not so much at shelters. Byrant is well aware af all the money made in Winnipeg, selling dogs to research labs, and I'm sure he allready has plans for all that money.(McGuinty allready said bryant has earned his pay on this bill) Getting them out of shelters is a priority, but the press is makeing that effort allmost impossible. The sad truth is most people don't look at the facts, they look at newspapers.
The hate Bryant has brought onto the pit bull is allmost, if not for sure, unrepairable, the days of "our gang" and "Petey" are all but forgoten.
Moveing them out of province, might save a few, but moveing hundreds of dogs would boil down to dollers and cent's. This Bill must be stoped, thats the only realalistic way to save these dogs, and all the rest of the breeds, the Fiberals will add to the ban. The standing commity is stacked by Bryant, but it did work out in New Brunswick, We've got to fight this bill to the biter end.
Akeeter January 6th, 2005, 09:57 PM and it is a small shelter. Their pictures cannot be posted on the website for adoption cuz of the local by-law that was passed. Not even the puppies!
( The by-law was passed with less than One day's notice for objections to be filed, or brought to town council, & pushed thru the same day! 3 Readings of the Law done in one day, & one Looong council session. If these 'people' feel that BSL has such 'overwhelming support' , why do they pass these laws like  Thieves In the Night?! :yuck: )
Take a Bow, some of you Brantford Politicians. :clown: :clown:
twodogsandacat January 6th, 2005, 10:49 PM The committee may be stacked with Liberals but that's not all that's stacked. The facts are also starting to pile up. When this legislation was introduced they spoon fed the population lies and made the mistake of ignoring any party that didn't agree with them. Amazingly that also included Donna Trempe the mother of Courtney Trempe who was killed by a dog which was not a pit bull. Now over the holidays another dog related death and once again there is no pit bull to point the finger at. The Liberals have opened the door on dog safety and the better the population is informed as to the real facts the less likely this will pass. It's not over till it's over and the reality is that the courts have often found in favour of facts. Lies can be presented in the legislature but in a court of law it is frowned upon. We must continue to educate the public. Certainly one of the heroes is the Pulse 24 reporter who caught Bryant on camera lying. This must be the image people recall when they hear the name Bryant. Bryant must be made out to be the liar he really is.
As for local politicians that pass these laws you have a say the next time they run for office. As far as Dalton and Bryant are concerned I already have a pit bull card picked out to mail the moment I hear they lost.
:ca: Ontario Liberals - The one term wonders - see you in another thirty years :ca:
babyrocky1 January 8th, 2005, 08:44 PM Welcome Dread, Im really glad that you posted. I was under the impression and so was my daughter and neighbour that the dogs in the humane societys and shelters would remain adoptable! Ive thought that for quite sometime so my concern is if we don't know about the impending doom who does. We need to get this out in the media somehow. They obviously don't care but still, we have been putting all of our lobbying efforts to the ban itself and yes Im very worried about muzzling my dog but this is a horrific situation and I truly don't think that the public is aware of it. When the bill was first introduced I know that there was concern but I thought the fibs had announced that the dogs in the shelters now would be at least allowed to be adopted. Ofcourse it wo uld be difficult to find people to take on the politics and the regulations etc. but at least there was a chance. I guess it either didn't happen or they were just lying as usual.
Dread January 9th, 2005, 05:37 PM Yes I forgot to mention that those that are not put down are destined for an even more agonizing fate. They will be used in lab experiments till their is nothing left of them. There is a section in the bill that discuss's that. So euthanization, or a life of torture...either way it will be the destruction of our poor friends. And yes I don't think the public is aware of this, that's why i posted and that's why people need to know, i feel that if people realized there's more to this bill than muzzling and fixing, they would realize the gravity of the situation. I should also mention that prior to the bills announcements pitbull adoption rates were excellent at my shelter, since the bills announcement the rates have gone down. There is one particular pitbull who is better behaved than any other dog in the place, he is sweet and gentle beyond belief and very friendly. Yet this poor dog is passed over as the others are adopted. Actually, maybe it's because of the cold season but adoption rates of dogs in general have gone down, and i do think it's definatly linked to the bill since it involves more than just pitbulls but also has that ridiculous menacing dog part and the heavier fines for bites.
LL1 January 9th, 2005, 05:52 PM It's awful. It's legal to sell dogs in shelters for research, and some shelters do it. Usually they send the sweet docile ones, it's disgusting.
Loki January 9th, 2005, 06:09 PM It doesn't help that the Liberals are lying about it to the people that contact them also. I specifically mentioned the issue of the shelter dogs in one of my letters to the liberal Mpps. Most just sent back the form letter that everyone has.
One Liberal Mpp actually wrote back. He said something along the lines of:
"Your concerns do not match the proposed legislation. No dogs will be killed, or otherwise harmed, because of this proposed law.
We are simply asking current owners to muzzle and neuter their dog and preventing people from obtaining a pit bull in the future. Responsible owners already do this, anyway."
That is the spin the Liberal's are trying to put on this, and I'm willing to bet that it is what they are all telling people. I'll try to find the email and post it if I find it.
About the research: I'm betting McGuinty already has the companies lined up.
The last thing they want is pictures of flooded shelters hitting the news.
