I wanted to get a transcript of the CNN clip and put this together. It's
probably 96% accurate (as opposed to 95% or 98% ;-)).
Julie
------------
Starts: Natalie with a small boy who is feeding her dog Rocco.
Ali (voiceover with shot of Petey and then a drawing of Nipper) "It's kind
of like taking candy from a baby. Petey from our gang was a pit bull. So
was nipper, the dog from his master's voice. ..." and mentions that nipper
was a pit bull.
Then switches to a shot of a red dog in a HS that is barking and says "For
many though the words pit bulls invoke terror."
Then Bryant: "We've seen enough evidence that this dog seems to be a breed
apart and if it is a breed apart we have an obligation to do something
about it."
Ali: "MB is behind legislation to ban pit bulls in Canada's largest
province. He's Ontario's AG, (swing to posters at rally) not a Tyranny
General."
Julie: "What we need to understand is in any breed there can be individual
dogs that can have a problem, that have issues and it is up to the owners
to understand and take responsibility for their pet regardless of breed."
Ali "At a pro-pit bull rally in TO it was a familiar refrain. Pit Bulls
aren't the problem, irresponsible dog owners are. They say that if raised
properly the dogs are harmless. (swing to photo of AG) Bryant is unmoved."
Bryant: "For me it is not actually about the people who own the dogs, it is
about the dogs themselves. It is a classic nature vs nutured debate."
Ali: (swing to Ali walking towards camera with Rocco): "Rocco is a 2 year
old dog that would be affected by the legislation. Now Rocco's owner says
this dog has never hurt anyone and while she doesn't object to legislation
to control dangerous dogs, what she does object to is BSL."
Ali: (showing Natalie) "She would rather see laws that punish the deed, not
the breed." (shows bumper sticker then swing to Natalie, Ali & Rocco in QP)
"There is something about this breed that makes them very strong. Their
jaws are big, they are strong dogs, so if for whatever reason this dog
decides to be aggressive (pause) I might get more hurt than I would (pause
and voice raises) with other dogs?
Natalie: Opposed to a poodle? Or opposed to a Rottweiler?
Ali: (voiceover showing dogs at THS) "Half the dogs waiting for adoption at
the THS are pit bulls. If the ban goes through and that could happen by
spring 2005 they can't be adopted."
Ali: "Ten minutes ago this dog was acting like it was going to bite
somebody's head off and now she is acting like a family pet. But the THS
says dogs like Dusty have a bad reputation."
Ali (Swing to girl in living room - Ali's voice over): "The contradiction
is hard to explain though to 11 year old Lindsay Grandy who was attacked by
her next door neighbour's son's pit bull last summer."
Linday: "I think the whole pit bull breed is a bad breed because it's bred
to fight."
(shows dog running towards camera on leash) "Good dogs or bad, for Linday's
father the question is much simpler."
Steve Grandy: "Why have them? Why do we need to have dogs that are bred to
be vicious fighting animals in a populated area?"
