dog in heat...again!

I have an 8 month oold shar pei, female. She first went into heat at about 5 and half months ...bleeding way too long. Finally took to vets after about 5 weeks of it and she was put on an antibiotic to reduce swelling and it stopped the bleeding. Here we are again..2 months later and she is bleeding again. Thinking it must be a problem with her uterus not developing properly or something. Anyone else have a similar problem? or any other suggestions as to why this is happening? Was hoping to breed her someday that is why we have not had her fixed yet but will go to the vets this week to check it out. Thank you for any response.

5 months? Holy moly. You should get her spayed asap. She could be developing cysts which are bursting. 5 months is VERY young to get a first heat. Spaying a dog reduces the risk for cancer, which cysts can turn into. You may want to get an ultra sound done on her uterus.
There defintely sounds like there is a problem with your girl.

As well, please think twice about breeding. The Shar Pei is another dog who has started to feel the breed specific legislature because of the amount of ill tempered dogs out there. Please let the professional breeders sort out this problem before you go start breeding. The Shar Pei is a delicate breed which is prone to MANY generic defects. If you want to see her mother a bunch of pups, get in touch with your local humane society and see if they need a foster home for some pups abondaned by their mother. Dogs have the ability to produce milk to help suckle them.

Thanks for the reply! Do u know how much an ultrasound would cost? We have a vet who is familiar with the shar pei breed. The breeder (who lives close) has used him since she started brededing them. Cysts? That doesn't sound good. Hope it's not that serious but will definately check it out. Thanks!

It depends how your dog is as to what the ultra sound will cost. If shes good and stays still, it's about 120 dollars (roughly Canadian) and if she's moving around a lot or nippy, they'll have to sedate her and it will be about 150 - 175.

You may want to know they need to have about 3 of these when you breed them. It's expensive!

Well..took Taie to the vet on Friday. He just checked her out physically and told us to call him back if the bleeding has not stopped in 3 weeks. If not he said he will put her on antibiotics again to make it stop..and go from there. He said he is not too concerned at the moment because every dog is different and sometimes females make themselves go into heat..feeling that they want to get pregnant and that the nice weather is coming and a good time to be pregnant. Kinda like humans..planned pregnancy. This is kinda how he explained it. Did not know dogs could hmake themselves go into heat.

Melz - can you please think twice about breeding, please go check out petfinder.org right now there is over 50,000 PUREBRED dogs waiting to be adopted. Only about 1/50th of the rescues are listed on there. So take a guess at how many unwanted purebred dogs are out there.
