Dog
breed description
|
The Komondor is a large Hungarian
sheepdog breed brought to Europe in the 9th century by the Magyars,
who kept it primarily to protect, rather than to herd, their flocks.
It is a powerful, heavy-boned dog, and is covered from head to tail
in a heavy, shaggy white coat, which is woolly in texture and becomes
matted if uncombed. The coat was left tangled and unkempt by the Hungarian
shepherds, for it provided the dog with excellent protection from the
fangs of wolves and other predators. It is a courageous and faithful
breed and its heavily shaggy white coat is likened to a mop because
of its tendency to hang off the body and over the face in separate cordlike
strips; ears are medium-length and hang down side of head in a V-shape;
tail reaches down to hocks and curls slightly at end; eyes are dark
brown. It is related to Russian steppe dogs used by Huns and its name
means somber, surly, or angry, adjectives used to describe the ancient
flock guards from which modern breed descended.
