Temperament |
A
magnificent hunter of wild boar and mountain lion, El Dogo Argentino
has extremely strong hunting instincts, incredible determination
and legendary courage. Very alert and jovial, he possesses uncanny
intelligence and a keen wit. This is a very people oriented
dog, who is extremely friendly and outgoing, unless given reason
to be otherwise. His self-confidence makes him very trusting
of humans with whom he is patient and communicative.
While being incredibly obedient and willing to please, he is
extremely sensitive to his handler and cannot tolerate forceful
training methods. This versatile animal is capable of intense
concentration, learns rapidly and retains what is learned almost
indefinitely; however, it is easily bored by overwork and repetition.
A good watchdog, El Dogo Argentino is calm around the house,
yet he is alert and ready at a moments notice; however, this
in not his primary function- he is a hunter, first and foremost.
As such, it is not a barking dog, although he is endowed wit
a thunderous bark, modulated rhythmic and constant when he wants
to call attention to something he deems important. He is a one
family dog who needs close contact with its members and is unhappy
when separated from them. When properly socialized with children,
it is notably tolerant and gentle. He should also be socialized
with domestic animals at an early age, to curtail any subsequent
aggression towards them. Males and females are very stable and
remarkably sweet while being tough to the core. They are more
like a force of nature than a mere animal. |

Dog
breed description
|
The noble white dog known
as El Dogo Argentino, in the U.S. as the Argentine Dogo, is appreciated
by canophiles everywhere for it's many abilities and wonderful temperament.
The Dogo is the result of an excellent and meticulous breeding program
combining the ten breeds pictured here to create a large game hunter
capable of besting such adversaries as wild boar, puma, jaguar and fox.
In 1947, after 20 years of
a rigorous breeding and selection program, El Dogo Argentino was introduced
to the world in the Argentine magazine Diana. Authored by the breed's
creator, Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, this article presented the first
standard for the Dogo. After his tragic death in 1956, the breeding
program was left to his brother, Dr. Augustin Nores Martinez, who had
assisted Antonio from the beginning of his endeavor in the provence
of Cordoba. Along with Agustin were a select few hunters such as Elias
Owen and Amadeo "Chi Chi" Bilo who aided in the breeding and
repopulation process since by then the national dog of Argentina had
diminished drastically in numbers. It should be noted that at this time
most of the breeding was taking place in the provinces of Chubut and
Pampas. In 1964 the Federacion Cynologique Argentina (FCA) recognized
El Dogo Argentino. Augustin received international recognition for the
breed in by the Federacion Cynologique International (FCI) in 1973.
Today, the Dogo is seen worldwide
as one of the greatest large game hunters as well as impressing many
with its accomplishments in schutzhund, french ring sport and much more.
A loyal companion, a guardian of master and home, and the ultimate hunter,
El Dogo Argentino is a gentle and noble friend to all.
